habit--normally the stems would be erect, but due to rain, these are lying sideways! leaves--are these leaves simple or compound?

leaf from the bottom half of the stem--notice that it is relatively large compared to the leaves of the upper stem (see below) lower leaves, showing the hairs covering the surfaces--these hairs give the leaves a rough feel (and so this species is commonly called rough goldenrod)

leaves of the upper half of the stem--notice how much smaller these are compared to the leaves of the lower stem (see above).  In this group of the Asteraceae, such dimorphism in leaves between the upper and lower part of the stem is common. heads in Fall
