Perennial, grows in moist areas and stream banks. Widespread, occurs from southern Canada to northern Colombia. Notice that the stamens are united into a tube. Tubular corolla, 30-50 mm long, bilaterally symmetrical. Lobelia cardinalis has toxic alkaloids and can be fatally poisonous to humans and livestock.
