Flowers are in long-peduncled cymes. Five sepals, petals and stamens. fruit is a two-horned capsule.
 
Leaves are ovate-elliptic to elliptic-lanceolate. Mitreola petiolata grows in moist, sandy areas and ponds. This one was growing in shallow sand on limestone.
