habit, showing leaves and flowers--Phlox roemeriana is a low-growing Spring-flowering annual corolla closeup--Phlox roemeriana is called "goldeneye phlox" because of the yellow center.  The pinkish purple lines pointing to the corolla tube are called nectar guides.  Only an insect with a very long and narrow proboscis (such as butterflies and moths) could pollinate this flower.

flower in side view--the calyx lobes are narrow and pointed (and very hairy too!) habit again--without the flowers, it would be difficult to spot the phlox!
