Talking about Experiments

In my text and in my lectures, I describe key experiments in some detail because I feel strongly that this is indispensable for an education in science. Those students who talk to me after class and come to office hours are enthusiastic about this feature. I have a suspicion that those who don't talk to me would prefer the more conventional approach: instructor and textbook present the facts, students memorize them and spit them back out in exams. I am concerned about the substantial fraction of advanced biology undergraduates who have a hard time discussing experiments and relating them to hypotheses. So in the 2nd edition of my text, I have extended the experiment descriptions with a few questions designed to make students think about experimental design. Any comments or suggestions? (KK)
